Classify the next action

For each open item, identify whether the next step belongs to the client or the firm. Keep the source document and its receipt status separate from the internal task it supports. A pending task should not automatically become a missing-document request.

Make the question specific

Where information is genuinely missing, identify the transaction or document reference and the exact question the accountant needs answered. Avoid exposing unnecessary account details in a message. If the supplied record is ambiguous, ask for clarification rather than suggest an accounting treatment.

Check the period handoff

Bring the checked responses, completed internal tasks and unresolved exceptions into the review packet. Keep receipt, reconciliation and approval as different states. The assistant can prepare the packet but should not claim the accounts are final or post entries.

  • Month-End Close Checklist

A checklist for accounting firms distinguishes collecting statements and requesting missing client documents from later stages of internal period-close work.

The vendor presents these tasks in a single list; it does not establish two separate lists or assigned owners. It is not accounting advice.
